Ghana health service has issued a statement alerting the general public on polio type 2 virus detected in koforidua, the eastern region of the republic of Ghana.

The new virus was discovered by the polio laboratory of the Noguchi Memorial institute for medical research. The type 2 polio virus (cVDPV2) was from an environmental sampling conducted in koforidua site in eastern region, collected on the 20th august 2024, according to the statement released by the health ministry of Ghana.

The general public are encouraged to observe Improved personal hygiene and good sanitation practices, as part of measures to mitigate the spread and transmission of the new virus.

The ministry has also promised to scope their investigations on the new virus across other regions to aid in planning and to avert possible spread among the general public.

The exercise by the ministry will include; further environmental sampling, communication and social mobilization, extent of geographical spread among others.

The ministry assured the general public of their readiness to partner with various stakeholders regional and sub-regional, to ensure there is no spread of the virus.
