Goals are specific targets for many youth across globe. however, the endurance towards achieving and sustaining goals, has become a nightmare for most youth, specifically in sub-Saharan regions and parts of African continents ,where there are no mechanized system to lubricate initiatives and support creativity. Unguarded goal settings have rendered most youth, pale in their own imagination

These concerns necessitated the call by human resource consultant and adjunct lecturer at the Ghana institute of management and public administration (GIMPA), Mrs. Naomi Marbell to urge the youth to stay on their goals. however, charging them to set realistic goals and stick to their plans towards achieving them in manner that resonate with their dreams.

speaking on youth express on Gtv, Mrs. Marbell said, situations and trends must not oblige the youth to set a goal they cannot attain. stating that, ” goals should come from the setters, it should be something they are eager to attain on their on potentials. stressing that, when goals are built around seeking external support to achieve, it is bound to fail. because people will not always be around to support your dreams” .

She also stress on setting goals that are subject to adjustment and periodic review to help sustainability.

Mrs. Marbell added that, in as much as the youth are often compelled to set big dreams, it is apparent to note that, big dreams are best achieved with small and strategic step by step goals to attain the expected dreams.

” You need a big dream. but you need smaller goals to help you achieve that big dreams of yours” she asserted.

She tasked the youth to break their dreams into gradual goals and subject them to a measure that can be quantified to help assess performance and give room for review and adjustment towards future attainment of their set priorities of goals.

She added that, when goals are duly broking into routine task, it helps to ensure time attainment as well as realizing those goals without the need to go through any psychological or emotional quagmire.

“When you set target for your goals, it makes you achieve something. rather than living everything just like that. so target will help you break big dreams into smaller, to enable you achieve it” she said.

Nonetheless, the HR consultant also admonished the youth aspiring for a goal, not to only focus on the goals, instead, they should first prioritize behavioral trait that will lead them towards their aspired goals.

According to her, the eminent priority of every goal setting should first consider behavioral change, initiated towards step to attainment of the exact goal setting. “Goals attained around behavioral change are effective and sustainable”.

“Goal is external to you but the behavioral change is what i will do step by step to get there. Do i need to go to school, do i need to do journalism courses, do i need to save, I don’t even have the money, how am I going to save?, how is the savings going to be? so your behavior will make you achieve your goal” she insisted.

she added that, ” if your focus is on the goal itself, am afraid you will fail in the process”.

Apparently, the behavior around goals are the recipe towards it attainment. when you intend to achieve a set goal, there are mechanism leading to its attainment. critical among effective goal setting, is the use of ” smart” principle. Where goals set, should, built around, “specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timely”

“It is a waste of time, resource and pleasure to set a goal stressing around what you know is outside your reach. hence, deliberate attempt must be made within specific and attainable goals”.
