The managing Editor of the insight newspaper, comrade Kwesi Prat JNR, has described the move by the electoral commission to omit birth certificate as primary source document for verification to acquire valid voter card, as nonsensical and exercise in mediocrity.
According to him, there would not be any document worthy to prove the citizenship of individual citizens, than the birth certificate issued at birth in various health centers of the country.
On good morning Ghana on Wednesday, Mr. Prat said, the birth certificate over the years, has been the source document to acquire many sub documents one could need to prove his identity as citizen of Ghana, therefore he sees no reason why such document would be relegated during the authentication of one’s citizenship before acquiring voter ID.
Meanwhile, section 1 of the electoral commission’s CI awaiting maturity before parliament, seeks to limit their primary source document to only the passport and the Ghana card, for which the registration is still in progress with many Ghanaians yet to be registered on the NIA records. While many of those who have registered, are yet to get their cards, with just about a month to commence the new register roll.
The CI, when matured and approved, will render all other previous primary source documents, illegal and unworthy for legal tender in any public or private documentation.
Meanwhile, large number of the citizens has kicked against the move by the commission, yet it bent on going ahead to subject the entire country in a state of “anarchy” with it fixing of new electoral roll in this circumstances of ours.
