Managing Editor of the insight newspaper, kwesi prat , has expressed reservation over the
president of Ghana’s commitment to ensure peace and stability in the country before, during
and after 2020 elections. According to him, precedents in current happenings within state
security institution and electoral commission of Ghana, lives a lot to be desired with regards to
the possible peace and stability in the country.
President Nana Akufo-Addo has said that the nation’s peace and prosperity is more important
than the ambitions of political figures. Nana Akufo-Addo, speaking ahead of the 2020 elections
said, the peace and stability Ghanaians have enjoyed since the country became a Republic will
not allow any political party or leader to throw the country in a state of chaos.
In a Tweet, he said, “The good sense of the Ghanaian people, which has preserved the peace
and stability of the 4th Republic for the last 27 years, will continue to prevail, and they will not
permit any poor, desperate loser to plunge this country into chaos. Ghana is bigger than the
ambitions of any of us.” He made the comments at the 20th Anniversary of the Tertiary
Students Confederacy of the New Patriotic Party (TESCON) at the Ho Technical University in the
Volta Region.
Akufo-Addo further assured his contender in the coming general elections, John Mahama, that
there will be no strife nor confusion before and after the polls. His comments come after
assertions made by the former President Mahama to the effect that there will strife, conflict
and chaos in the aftermath of the December 7 elections.
Addressing a packed Ho Technical University auditorium, the President stated that “I think that
it is important for the credibility of our national public discourse that public persons are seen to
be consistent in their views and advocacy.
However, Mr. prat emphasized, if the president could not ensure the peace in his party, he
cannot guarantee the country’s peace. He also added that, the president cannot continue
reiterating peace rhetoric, when his posture contradicts his utterance.
Mr. prat sited incident of Ayawaso west Wuogon and the posture of the president after the
submission of the Emil short commission’s report, where some alleged hoodlum in security
outfit, came to mar the peaceful by-election under the direction of the national security
minister, honorable Bryn Acheampong. Operation which saw shooting of innocent Ghanaian
and subjected him to a wheel chair.
Comrade prat further challenged president to deal with internal brutalities being recorded in
his party from his inception as the leader of the party till date. Referencing the acid incident of
late Adams Mahama and assaults on some party executives in various regions. “If you cannot
assure us of the peace to your party, how you can assure the entire country” prat stressed. He
added that “Is not about what he says, is about what he does”.
He also expressed consternation over the vindictive nature of some security institutions against
civilians in recent times, denying them of their civil and democratic rights on several counts to
demonstrate. He further reiterated that, peace cannot be assured in a country where hoodlums
are secretly recruited in the services to antagonize opposition in an election year.
